Biogenic chert is a hard, microcrystalline silica rock formed from the accumulated siliceous skeletons of marine organisms like radiolarians, diatoms, and sponge spicules. Over millions of years, these delicate glass structures dissolve and reprecipitate as dense, incredibly hard chert layers.
