Migmatite is a striking rock that forms at the boundary between metamorphism and melting — where temperatures are so extreme that parts of the rock begin to melt while other parts remain solid. The result is beautiful swirled patterns of light and dark bands.

Fun Fact

Migmatite's name comes from the Greek 'migma,' meaning mixture, because it's literally a mix of igneous melt and metamorphic solid in the same rock.
